Your guide to Klifbrekkufossar, Iceland
Nestled in East Iceland’s Mjóifjörður fjord, Klifbrekkufossar is a stunning 7-tier waterfall falling down a 90-meter (295 ft) slope. Accessible only via a gravel road, it’s a rewarding stop if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-track adventure.
The name Klifbrekkufossar translates to ‘Climbing Slope Falls’, which perfectly describes its dramatic tiered cascades. The slopes in the name likely refer to the rugged terrain of the Mjóifjörður side of the mountain pass.
The gravel road leading to the base of the narrow fjord stretches about 18 kilometres (11 mi). To navigate it safely, you’ll need a 4X4 vehicle.
Unlike many of Iceland’s waterfalls, Klifbrekkufossar isn’t fed by glacial rivers but by the spring-fed Fjarðará river. As one of the lesser-known waterfalls in Iceland, this hidden gem is the perfect escape if you’re after a peaceful retreat in nature.
Klifbrekkufossar waterfall is only open from June to September when the hiking trails are clear and the river is at its most powerful.
