Your guide to lake Lagarfljót, Iceland
Lake Lagarfljót, also called Lögurinn, is a serene lake in the east of Iceland, spanning 53 square km (33 square mi). You’ll find it near Hallormsstaður, the largest forest in Iceland.
Surrounded by lush greenery and rolling hills, this lake is a must-see if you’re a nature lover.
While you’re here, don’t miss Hengifoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s tallest waterfalls, tumbling 128 m (420 ft) into a stunning gorge nearby. Pair this with a visit to Hallormsstaður forest, home to hiking trails and picnic spots. Here, you can soak in the beauty of Iceland’s only national forest.
Egilsstaðir, the region’s largest town, is right on the lake’s shore, where you can enjoy breathtaking views across the water.
But lake Lögurinn isn’t just about the scenery – it’s also home to a mysterious legend. Much like Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster, the Lagarfljót Worm (or Lagarfljótsormur) is said to live in the lake. Keep an eye out – you never know when you might spot this mythical creature!
