Your guide to Skriðuklaustur, Iceland
Skriðuklaustur is a farmstead and museum in East Iceland’s Fljótsdalur valley. Built in 1939, this historic site was the home of famous Icelandic writer Gunnar Gunnarsson. You’ll also find that one of Vatnajökull National Park is based here.
Today, Skriðuklaustur is a center of culture, hosting exhibitions, events, and guided tours.
The tours are a great way for you to learn more about Gunnar Gunnarsson’s life and work, as well as the history of the building.
The house, designed by the German architect Fritz Höger, stands out with its walls made from natural stone and a traditional Icelandic grassy roof. This helps it blend perfectly with the lush valley around it.
Nearby, you’ll find an archaeological excavation site uncovering the remains of a 16th-century monastery. There’s also a cozy on-site restaurant, Klausturkaffi, where you can enjoy delicious local dishes.
Skriðuklaustur’s opening hours change throughout the summer and the site may be closed during winter. Be sure to check the official website for up-to-date info before you plan your visit.
